Did you know that you can make your own beer at home? If you are a regular beer drinker like me, then you had to have thought about it. Many more beer lovers are taking a shot at home brewing than ever before. Think of yourself as a chef; a beer chef!

Home brewing beer can be a family project or just a new hobby for yourself. It really is not as hard as you would imagine. Lots of folks would just rather go to the store and buy their beer, but what fun is that? However, it is not about the convenience or the cost of the beer in stores. It’s about pride and that little hope you hold out that maybe your concoction will become a hit and make you some money!

Homebrew Beer and the Tradition of Making Beer From Home

Homebrew Beer is a time honored Art Form. Homebrew beer show the taste and skill of the brewer. There are many differences between homebrew beer and mass produced beer.

“Homebrew”, is generally a much more “active” beer, and can be cold filtered, and carbonated via injection with Co2, or it can be done naturally, a natural method of many home brewers. Beer, wine, cider, and mead are all made by the same basic process, fermentation. Yeast is added to a sugar solution. The yeast eats the sugar and produces carbon dioxide and alcohol. The brewer’s only jobs are to make the sugary solution and create the best possible conditions for the yeast to do their work.

When you first search for Home Brewing information, you might be overwhelmed by what you find. I know I was. I saw pictures of all types of contraptions. You would think that you were trying to bring Frankenstein’s monster to life instead of trying to make a good beer at home.

Making Beer at Home - A Brief Overview

When it comes to making beer at home, the first thing you need to do is to go out and purchase a very basic home brewing kit. Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $150 for the kit. To get the brewing underway you will need a number of items. In general, this list includes a stopper, a plastic hose, a brew pot, a primary fermenter, bottle brush, bottle capper (if you choose to use glass bottles), bottles, a bottling bucket and a thermometer. You will also require a variety of household items including a small bowl, saucepan, rubber spatula, oven mitts/pot handlers, and a large mixing spoon that is made of either plastic or stainless steel.
